Fished sand hole and the mouth, showing signs of life with sea lions and plenty of birds in the area. Still no rolling salmon. I have been hearing reports of people catching at the mouth a week or so ago. I fished on sept 10th and 12th.

Smith River Zoo! Imagine the first day of fishable flows on a Saturday. Many did well, some were frustrated - I didn't even put in, waaayyyy too many boats to be of interest to me, I can wait. Heard Sunday was a bloodfest upstream of the 101.

I just recently drove up from Ventura to fish the Madd River, but ended up on the Smith due to the conditions. I have been using this site to monitor the river levels and read the reports; it's been a great help. Too bad some of the people just can't get along. There are always more than one way to skin a cat. I have been fishing for over twenty years now, and have fished just about every species there is in the Pacfic and the Western US both in fresh water and salt. There is a time and a place for every type or method of fishing. When it comes to steelhead, I prefer throwing hardware but I will side drift, plunk, or use a float if I have to. A good fishermen has to be able to change with the conditions. Anyways enough about that, I ended up on the Smith and hooked a nice chrome steeley on roe (about 12 pounds). It's been about 12 years since I was in Washington and have had a chance to catch steelhead, so I just wanted to say thanks to this site and all the great imformation and help I was given at the Eureka Fly Shop, and the guys at Pro Sports. Thanks to you all!

I caught a nice ten pound native hen today and a fifteen pounder broke my line as it leaped. There are some steelhead in the smith and they are biting, concentrate on broken water, and middle of rifles, keep your baits small. numbers are small so twenty casts, and find a new spot.Cold in the morning no point in being there at the crack of dawn, bite comes on later. Sorry, got to keep locations secret for now.Good luck

The south fork of the smith at stevens bridge was packed with half pounders, some nice 15 inchers. After a dozen on consecutive casts I decided not to waste my row anymore, no adult salmon or steelhead. I fished rattlesnake, not enough water. The falls hole yelded only several half pounders. yesterday I caught nice 8lb. native buck at the mad river hatchery. One to two inches of rain would be nice, follwed by sunny skies, yeah right.

The Smith will come alive any time now. I drifted my kayak down through the Sand Hole three times in the last two weeks, but the salmon haven't started coming through in big numbers yet. Rumor has it some fish are already up-river in the "no fish zone."

Been watching river since 3 December 2005 this season. People catching Steelhead up and down river. Plunking and drifting good; silver spoons and trebles at S. Fk. Lauch Bar recently; Christensen Bridge holding pool full last week 100 plus steelhead spawning size & condition; puff balls and roe balls from drifts; use good 2-6 oz. weights while plunking and a 1-3 foot leader to hook; some use yarn and bait; yarn and puff balls; spin-glows and roe balls plunking; water tower and below weak last 2 weeks; Tetson empty; so was Bailey's/ Transmission- too low; Peacock hot this season; these fish ae up & down right now; south fork has seen a lot of effort lately; my temps are 41-51 F this season with average about 43-45 F; derby last was 100 plus fish all teams, no take; 2000 plus inches total; River should be improving this week.

Smith River - November 17th, 2005 RECORDED: 40 ° FISHING: Fair Gear: Shimano reels, Rogue rods, kwikfish, roe Weather: Sunny Air Temperature: 35-55 River Flow: 1910 (7.5 feet) Water Temperature: 4 Water Clarity: Clear On the Water: 8:00am Off the Water: 5:00pm Fishing on the Smith River is tough right now. The water has dropped to 7.5 feet and is gin clear. I got a chance to go check it out on Thursday and Friday with Ross Cooley (Cooley & Pollard Hardware in Yreka) and Stan Egeline. We took Stan’s drift boat and all of us took turns rowing and fishing from the Forks to Ruby then from the Forks to Outhouse. On Thursday Stan landed a beautiful 8.5-pound Steelhead (buck) and later in the day I landed a small 8-pound Salmon (hen). We all got skunked on Friday. Both fish were landed in the cable hole and were very bright. Stan landed his on roe and I landed mine on a kwikfish. The river needs some rain to bring it up and put some color in it. Three to four more feet of water would be great. Salmon is the main attraction right now with fish up to 60 pounds having been landed so far. Steelhead are mixed in right now but not a lot of them. www.caldwellfishing.com
