  3. From South Fork Eel River to Cape Horn Dam. Jan. 1 through Mar. 31 and Fourth Saturday in May through Sept. 30. At all times, only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used. Closed to all fishing Apr. 1 through the Friday preceding the fourth Saturday in May and Oct. 1 through Dec. 31. I copied this from the CDF&G web site.So you can fish from the Dam and down stream. I suggest you check the regs out for your self. They are also different regs for the N. Fork.

Comments:
Merry Christmas All. Yesterday, I drove down to Garberville to check out the Eel. It was muddy and rising. I then drove up the Van Duzen and the creeks were running high and muddy as was the river. According to the predictions on this site, it looks like tomorrow the Eel will be at its lowest level this week, and the Mad will be at its lowest level on the 27th. If the water clears we may have a chance to get our lines wet the next two days. There are fish in the Eel -- evidently last week (always) they were at the mouth of the Van Duzen and people were catching very large steelhead (10+ pounds). Good luck all.

First of all I know that this page is reserved for reports. But I must comment on the long lining, that is not fishing it should be refered to as snagging. And to top it off you sound so proud of your accomplishment, you even report you kept fish that were foul hooked. This in my opinion is not sportsman like at all, you are not a fisherman your a snagger. I'm not a purist, what I mean by that is I am a gear fisherman not a fly fisherman, but I would rather eat Sh-t that keep a fish that was foul hooked.

The Piercy area is pretty good, stop by Browns Sporting goods in Garberville they are pretty good at knowing where the locals are catching fish. You're best bet is to keep going north until you start getting into some color and hit the deep holes.

Eel River
Water Condition: Blownout  Weather: Raining
Comments:
With 3-4 inches of rain over the past few days, the river's one big swath of rising, fast-flowing chocolate milk. Watched a drift-boat load of die-hards (I remember the day...) float past the house in a pourdown mid-morning yesterday, not stopping to fish major runs or holes. A single pontoon boat began to launch this morning and then thought better of it, as large wood debris, including uprooted trees from Trinity River Restoration Project work (complete with orange flagging), began making their way downstream. With rain predicted through Friday, the coming weekend won't be any better. On the bright side, this should put fish on the move, bringing new ones in and redistributing those already in-river, when the water falls and clears between storms. Still seeing an ocassional adult winter stoneflies... landing on my kitchen window.

As of May, the klamath River is still blown-out. It's at 5,610 cfs now. When it dips to 2,000 cfs, it will be fishable again. The river above copco is also blown-out. Hopefully the river will drop in time for the salmon fly hatch around memorial day.

We caught fish last week (Tues.) in the very upper end of the South Fork of the Eel near Leggett, which had visibility of about 36". Today I caught this nice buck in the Garcia River at about 9:00am. You can see from the photo there was about 30" of visibility in the river. We then went and fished Alder Creek where neither my buddy or I touched a thing but did see one caught in the hole below the parking area. Alder Creek also had about 30" of visibility. On the way home we checked the Navarro and it was way blown with about 2" of visibility...muddy. Unfortunately it started raining hard at about noon today so I would imagine most rivers will be blown out for the next three or four days. I guess my point is, don't always believe what you read. If you want to fish and think a river might be in shape, research a little deeper, make some calls and check flows on the web. I'm glad we've been taking our chances lately, we've been hitting a few fish here and there. Stoti
