VAN DUZEN RIVER HISTORY

MAP OF THE VAN DUZEN RIVER

The Van Duzen River is a major tributary of the Eel River. The Van Duzen is located 14 miles upstream form the mouth of the Eel. Its total length is about 50 miles, with the best fishing being below Bridgeville. The advantage of the Van Duzen over the Eel is that it does not blow out as easily and after a storm it clears a lot faster than the Eel.

The fish of the Van Duzen include steelhead, chinook, and coho or silver salmon . Chinook start coming into the river in September. The Chinook run from September through December, with the peak in late October. The average chinooks are 8-15 lbs, with some up to 40lbs.

Winter steelhead are what the Van Duzen River is known for. The winter steelhead start moving into the river in November running through March, with peak activity during January. The average Vandy steelie runs 8-10 lbs, with fish to 16lbs common and a number of fish in the 20lb class caught each year. The entire system - the Eel, the South fork of the Eel, and the Van Duzen -provide excellent opportunities for winter steelhead.
