SALMON & STEELHEAD SMOLT

The silver(coho) salmon is now protected under the Endangered Species Act and must be release when caught. The picture below shows one way to determine if the salmon is a king or coho. The fish on the left is a coho. The gums of the coho salmon are white. The fish on the right is a king(chinook) and has black gums.

During the summer months these smolts are present in all the coastal rivers. If you catch them please treat them gently are release them so they will return in a few years at their potential size!!
