It might be best to wait until the river level drops. Visit: ca river levels. There are Steelhead in the Mad...but long leaders are the only way to catch them. Consider fishing the upper parts of the Trinity River. Lots of Steelhead, they are late, but it is better than last year! My best guess is that January 22 and later will be the best time to go to the Mad.

I am driving up to the area and I'm looking forward to fishing on the Mad on or about the 10th or 11th or so. Anyone have a prognosis as to conditions? Appreciate an update on the conditions or changing conditions from those most experienced. Thoroughly enjoyed fishing on the Mad last year and meeting a number of fine folks.

I just recently drove up from Ventura to fish the Madd River, but ended up on the Smith due to the conditions. I have been using this site to monitor the river levels and read the reports; it's been a great help.
Too bad some of the people just can't get along. There are always more
than one way to skin a cat. I have been fishing for over twenty years
now, and have fished just about every species there is in the Pacfic and the Western US both in fresh water and salt. There is a time and a place for every type or method of fishing. When it comes to steelhead, I prefer throwing hardware but I will side drift, plunk, or use a float if I have to. A good fishermen has to be able to change with the conditions. Anyways enough about that, I ended up on the Smith and hooked a nice chrome steeley on roe (about 12 pounds). It's been about 12 years since I was in Washington and have had a chance to catch steelhead, so I just wanted to say thanks to this site and all the great imformation and help I was given at the Eureka Fly Shop, and the guys at Pro Sports. Thanks to you all!

Actually, if you read the report on DFG's website, Rivers are healthier
and more conducive to Salmon reproduction in National Forests than the Hoopa Reservation where road building is contaminating the river.

What has affected the Klamath more, subsistence fishing by native Americans, or white mans dams, mining, and logging? Which has had the most dramatic negative impact, and which is not compatible with sutainable salmon populations? Why can't some people take responcibility for their own abuses and accept the truth with humility?

Merry Christmas All. Yesterday, I drove down to Garberville to check out the Eel. It was muddy and rising. I then drove up the Van Duzen and the creeks were running high and muddy as was the river. According to the predictions on this site, it looks like tomorrow the Eel will be at its lowest level this week, and the Mad will be at its lowest level on the 27th. If the water clears we may have a chance to get our lines wet the next two days. There are fish in the Eel -- evidently last week (always) they were at the mouth of the Van Duzen and people were catching very large steelhead (10+ pounds). Good luck all.

I am on here trying to give and get information about river conditions and fishing reports to assist eachother in our quest of cathing more steelhead. Are there any actual fishing reports or river conditions posted? It seems that all I see is fly fisherman and bait fisherman having a pissing match. I could care less about your technique of catching fish and we all know about long lining and snagging. I just want to fish and have the most up to date and accurate fishing conditions to help me. Is that to much to ask? Lets all try and remember what it is we love to do and get out there and do it.

just because you see a flycaster using a shooting head it does not mean they are lining fish. I use a shooting head whenever I feel the need to get down to the fish more so they can see the fly. The fly gets to the fish first not the line and it is swung in front of the fish to piss them off they can strike or move out of the way if they want. To those of you who think you are fooling fish by lining them remember this the only one you are fooling is yourself. Anyone can snag a fish. I have been swinging flies for steelhead for 15 years every fish I have been fortunate enough to catch has been hooked properley because they are players and struck the fly.I have indicator fished for them a few times and found that you end up snagging more fish than you hook.

The Mad River is blown out right now -- high and muddy. I did see 6 spin fishermen in the parking lot. They fished for a couple of hours at the hatchery concrete access, but didn't hook anything. The hatchery appears to be shut down -- the raceways are empty -- there is no water in the processing raceways and the weir is dry. There is limited access for walking through the raceways -- blocked off and posted that nobody from the river is allowed access because of the danger of new zeland snails. In the past, the weir was nice to check if a slug of fish had come through. Guess the Mad is going to act like a "real river" this year--no hints from the weir. Tight lines all, once the rivers clear.

The Mad River has been open since Sunday. I'm going out this weekend and will post something. It is early but there could be a slug of fish that were waiting for the first flows.
As for long-lining: I was introduced to steelhead fishing on the Mad 20 years ago. The standard setup at the time was high-speed, hi-density shooting lines, with about a 6 foot leader of 8 - 12 pound Maxima.
The hi-d line swings along the bottom and, I've been told, enters the mouth of the fish sitting on the bottom (when they open and close their mouths). The belly of the line moves downstream pulling the leader and fly through the mouth of the fish, snagging the fish in the mouth.
One year there were a lot of fish and fishermen around the hatchery, with water visibility of about 2 feet. Some people were stating "that the fish have to be taking the fly". One of the local fly shop owners then put on a bare hook and caught 2 bright steelhead.
The Mad River is a "put and take" fishery with some great fly fishing above the hatchery for natives. Last time I went out, there was a line of 30 spin casters filling up the slots where one could fly fish (by the hatchery). The experience is softened knowing that on a good day you can turn over several fish in a few hours.
I was introduced to dry fly line, bobber, and fly, two years ago, and try to do that whenever possible. BUT, if there is a string of fly fishers, swinging shooting heads, and catching fish that came out of the hatchery, it is hard not to get into line (and the floating line with split shot will just hurt people when shoulder to shoulder.
Don't fault the fly guys though -- many of the spin guys do their own version of this.
Well, this is my first post to this forum and hopefully not too many flames will be sent my way. If I get out this weekend I promise to report what I see.

Hey Rude,
go to this site to read an article out of the times-standard.com Kinda fills you in a bit on the local rivers.
http://www.times-standard.com/ci_11193751
Another site is: http://www.times-standard.com/ci_11193751
by E. B. Duggan. He is pretty up-to-date.
Another source is the Eureka Fly Shop. I don't have the phone number handy but they have a local river fishing report on the phone.
theflyshop.com out of Redding has a good stream report if you are interested in the Trinity and Klamath and others in that general area.
This rain that we are expecting is getting me all excited. I enjoy fishing but I like catching too.
Good luck.

Have been fishing the Trinity below Willow Creek and hooked many small half-pounders over the past couple days. lots of Salmon activity, splashing around, leaping out of the water. Landed a 15 pound chinook with a blue fox and a 5 lb steelhead. all other fish caught swinging an egg pattern on a t300 sinking tip. long-lining means snagging. I know someone who does it and he does it because he has no patience to learn how and why fish eat what they do, and he cackles about proudly. Most snaggers are impatient fools who do not practice catch and release ethics. It is their decision. Nothing we can do about it, but it is quite a shame. This area has such great potential to have fisheries like Canada but as long as the locals act like idiots it will never get there from here. Even fishing with bait encourages people to kill fish just for roe. Guides do it all the time. Go up to Canada and look at the absolute abundance of huge fish and ask why. It is certainly not because they all take as much as possible. Protect what you have by saving it, not decimating it!

Fished the Trinity last week 11/17-11/20, we were drifting from J.C. campgroud to Pigeion point, all but one fish were caught on plugs, my favorite plug being the cooper Brads wiggler, we had one fish take roe under a bobber. All hatchery fish ran about 7-9lbs, the wild fish of which we caught 5 were bigger going 8-12lbs. We release all fish, I did catch 3 tagged fish that all had 10 dollar reward tags in them "sweet".
Now about "long lining", long lining is a term that is used loosely but the way I see it is this, with a long leader meaing about 10-15 feet you have a better chance of snagging the available fish because as the weight drifts downstream through the fish the long leader trails behind the weight upstream and being the leader is so long you have a better chance of running into a fish or "flossing" the fish in the mouth. The way I see it is the fish do not volintarilly take the bait most of the time you snag them somewhere other than the mouth!!!

What is this "long lining" you are all talking about? Do you mean a long leader with a fly on the end that hooks the fish somewhere other than the mouth? Or are you talking about traditional steelhead fly fishing, casting across /down stream and drifting (skating) across the top of the water (or a foot or so below)? If the fish strikes the fly with its mouth are you calling that snagging? I am not familiar with this long lining term?

Ted: I do understand your dissapointment that only a very few people post fishing reports.
I go to the Klammath, Trinity, and Mad Rivers often...and I come from Sacramento.
I think that the problem is that the locals do not want others to know that fishing is red hot...or that they do not have a PC to make a report.
The best time to fish the Mad is January and Februrary. December is probably OK depending on water flow. But, use a long line. That is the best way to hook (snag) Steelhead.
The Trinity River from Junction City to Lewiston is good now and will be good for a few months. Flys or bait works well.
The upper Klammath is good. I went last week (about 10 miles west of Hwy 5) and caught 15 Steelhead in the riffles with a small Kastmaster. All but one were released.
I concede that I am not "Bright"! Only a fool would fish in the rain or when ice crystals clogg the eyes of my rod..and spend 3 or 4 days and about $400 with the hope of catching a Steelhead. But, I'll never learn...I have been doing that for over 50 years.
Have a nice day.
Bob.

I meant no disrespect for those that fly fish. I fly fish on the Klammath for half pounders in the warm times of the year.
But for the Mad...in late December through January...I do not use a fly rod. And I have never seen a fly fisherman use a floating line or in a floating tube. All of them use a sinking lines.
The Mad is much different than the Trinity River. Fly fisherman do very well in the Trinity....I guess the reason is that the Trinity water is usually clear...not so for the Mad.
Have a nice day...and start fishing the Mad in late December!

I disagree Bob, though most of the time I am a fly fisher, I do occasionally fish with conventional gear on the mad. I Use a 24 inch leader under the mad with roe and catch several fish each year so I’m not sure why your convinced long lining is the only way to go. And as for calling fly fishermen snaggers, well that’s a bunch of BS. I fly fish the mad via floating an indicator (basically a bobber) and the line is perpendicular to the surface water, not strung out across the river like a long line. Therefore my line is not snagging fish.

I have fished the Mad river for many years and still do. I always used bait with a 24" leader. Never caught anything except a few small trout. I learned a few years ago that the bulk of the Steelhead...most are Hatchery fish...are caught via long leaders. In Sacramento they call it Flagging. It is snagging. If long leaders were not used very few fish would be caught.
I pass no judgement on anyone and I now use a leader about 4 foot long. Anything longer for me is too cumbersome. Unfortunately, I have only caught (hooked) two in 3 years.
Hatchery fish are meant to be caught...that is the whole purpose for inland fishing.
It is interesting to note that Fly fishermen think that they are catching Steelhead voluntarily...wrong...they are snagging...their leaders are as long as all the line on their reel.
Long leaders are legal...if you want to be skunked....use a short leader with bait!

First of all I know that this page is reserved for reports. But I must comment on the long lining, that is not fishing it should be refered to as snagging. And to top it off you sound so proud of your accomplishment, you even report you kept fish that were foul hooked. This in my opinion is not sportsman like at all, you are not a fisherman your a snagger. I'm not a purist, what I mean by that is I am a gear fisherman not a fly fisherman, but I would rather eat Sh-t that keep a fish that was foul hooked.

You won't catch a thing on the mad river right now. From what I know the trout below the hatchery are just baby fish. Above the hatchery I've heard there is trout but I've never tried going for them because there is much better fishing elsewhere. If you go to the mad river you will probably get skunked unless you go for steelhead around January. I went to the Klamath a couple of weeks ago around Weichtepec and the half pounder action was going off. Then 4 weeks ago it was the same thing except 2 weeks ago I caught a 7 pound steelhead that was mixed in with the bunch. I want to go up to the Klamath again because by now there are more big fish in the mix. You fish the Klamath or Trinity right now with spinners and your not a moron you'll definitely catch yourself some steelhead

What Pier is worthwhile and are Crabs there?
Shore fishing in the Bay...where would I go...I'm afraid of the jetty...too dangerous for me.

It's very easy to snag them...used to do it by accident all the time on the Feather River. Sorry to say but this F/U attitude is exactly was is killing fishing. Mr., there's a reason it's illegal. If you really need to kill a fish, do it in some other stae....like Oregon. See how they respond to you there.

Enjoy the thrill of going, Light for the Big Bite! We have mastered the techniques that must be utilized for catching extremely large Salmon, Steelhead, Trout and Shad on very light tackle. Either fishing out of the 2006 custom built jet powered FishRite, or the smooth and quiet drift boats, we will provide you with exciting fishing and a truly enjoyable time. Hi,
Thanks for the posts on the Klamath. I have fished this river a few times in the late summer down by the mouth (the Estuary I believe it is called). I have a 16ft aluminum boat with a prop motor, so I stay down low. I was wondering if it is possible to fish for springers down in the lower stretches of the river where I can get my boat. It sounds like most people are using jet boats to get a little further up stream but wanted to see if anyone knew about access with a prop boat. Thanks for any advice you have.

The Lower Klamath River is producing nice size Salmon in the 10-18 lb.
range and are taking green spinners on a standard spreader with the boat anchored within 15 ft. of the lower river shores.
Ahhhh... its nice to hear those reels sing on the hook up.
Looks like the Klamath will be at acceptable flows as promised by the water regulators through the Summer/Fall.
Locals are preparing for an excellent fishing season with a large quota of Salmon. The Klamath is the place to get your fish.
If you are going to hire a guide, be sure they are licensed by the Coast Guard as required by law.
Contact Gary at www.wildriverfishing.com to reserve your fishing trip on the Klamath.

Northern Cal & Southern Oregon rivers fishing report.
The Klamath is at 16.65 feet and 32,700 CFS and dropping.
The Rogue is at 6.90 feet and 10,600 CFS and dropping.
The hot weather has melted the snow packed in the mountains and the rivers were on the raise the Klamath went up 10,000 cfs and the Rogue went up 3,000 cfs the rivers are dropping with the rogue falling slower.
I am booking Klamath River Spring Salmon trips May 15th through July.
Spring Chinook salmon have begun entering the lower Klamath River, making their way upstream into the Trinity River where they will return to the hatchery or eventually spawn early this fall.
While the chrome-bright salmon make their way through the portion of the Klamath in Del Norte County, anglers from throughout the West try their luck for what is undoubtedly one of the best-tasting and hardest fighting on any salmon.
"It's been picking up," reports veteran lower Klamath guide David Castellanos of Smith River, who has set up fish camp at Golden Bear RV Park for the season.
"They were releasing lots of water from Iron Gate and Trinity dams and now they've stopped and the river has been dropping."
Castellanos, who also operates www.smithriverfishing.com, has been on the scene on the lower Klamath since the first fish of the season began showing up.
Springer fishing usually continues to be good into July.
Castellanos already has enjoyed a three-fish day.
Spring salmon, commonly known as springers, are prized because of their oily meat.
The salmon enter a handful of rivers, including the Klamath, Rogue, Umpqua and Columbia, as snow begins to melt from headwater mountain ranges, and then hold in the upper stretches of those rivers until the fall to spawn.
Only rivers that drain from mountains with large snow packs have springers.
Because the fish don't spawn until the fall, and they don't eat once they return to fresh water, the spring-run salmon are as fat as footballs and live off their oils and fats until they spawn.
Springers quickly move through the lower sections of rivers before holding in the cool headwater pools for the summer.
To catch them, anglers usually fish from jet boats, anchoring and waiting for the fish to come by.
"It's a fast-flowing river so you have to be tight to the edge," Castellanos says of fishing the Klamath.
"I like to keep to four and a half feet of water."
The springers will migrate upstream in the slower water close to shore, following the inside bends and path of least resistance.
Spinners are the go-to lure for Klamath springers.
Most guides and experienced anglers make their own, but a large selection also is available at Englund Marine in Crescent City.
Many anglers will use a wire spreader with a foot-long dropper and two-foot leader.
Castellanos is very particular about his leader and dropper lengths. He uses a 15-inch dropper and 28-inch leader. He ties the spreader to his P Line mainline and uses a graphite rod from Rogue Rods to walk his rig downstream.
The rods are then placed in the rod holders until a fish strikes.
Klamath springers are known to hammer a spinner and then take off full speed. Some fish, despite being relatively small compared to fall-run Chinook, have spooled anglers without even slowing down.
Anchor fishing for Klamath springers typically continues into mid-July. When water temperatures increase, anglers will begin trolling spinners in the estuary.
The quota for adult fall run salmon this season is an incredible 22,500.
Thank you good fishing.

The Memorial Day weekend ended with several anglers happy with their Lower Klamath River fishing trips.
Most Spring Salmon were taken on spinners with the boat anchored on the near shore. The river current is still running swift and levels were going down as of this posting, and will make the fishing better.
Good prospects for those wanting to get into the Summer/Fall Salmon and Steelhead fishing for 2008. Its our best quota in many years and good news for those who fish where the Salmon fishing is closed.
Make plans to get your Salmon and Steelhead on the Lower Klamath River in 2008. Those seriously interested should be planning and booking their fishing adventure now before prime fishing dates fill.
At Wild River Fishing Adventures we will be glad to get you where the fish are by jetboat into the wild and scenic Klamath River located in our back yard. We are celibrating over 40 years of local river guiding.

Klamath River Fishing - "Klamath In-River Salmon Fishing is"OPEN"for 2008"
Phone: (707)-391-7144 - Book Now for Best Dates !!
News Flash: The 2008 "Pacific Fish Management Counsel "(PFMC) has selected its new management plan. (direct link to the plan http://www.pcouncil.org/salmon/salpreIII08/salpreIII08.html) Within the report, specifically regarding the 2008 Klamath In-River salmon allocation, on page 16 "South of Cape Falcon" item 1, you will see that Klamath River recreational fishery allocation is 22,500 fish for sport fishing, & Item 2, Klamath Tribal allocation is 27,000. This means that the 22,500 fish will be split between the upper and lower rivers and the native Americans will receive 27,000 fish for commercial fishing. Presently there is a two adult salmon limit per person and when Fish & Game make their final ruling in June, it will probably remain the same. This sport fishing quota is the second largest we have seen in many many years. This will truly be the year of Klamath in-river salmon fishing.
Also we are just beginning to start picking up spring run salmon which will only get better as the day progress. Check out my website www.salmonslayer.net and give me a call if you are interested in catching a California salmon this year.

Even once the Mad reopens all there are is a bunch of baby fish. I was actually fishing a stream that is a tributary to the Mad, it probably isn't legal to fish I have no idea, my friend just took me, and we both caught little browns. It blew my mind. Toss a little gold spinner in may through summer, whenever the river is actually open, on ultra-light tackle (I personally like ugly stiks) and you can catch 10+ little 6 inch trout. Also near sundown the bigger 10-12 incher start feeding, but you seem to have to match the hatch a little to hook into them.
Be safe and tight lines.

Chris,
As I read my regulations book I see that the fishing on the Mad River ends on March 31, that's today. It doesn't start up again until the fourth Saturday in May, and then there are various stipulations. My regulations book was good only through February 28, 2008, even though we had 29 days in February. You might check the Eureka Fly Shop, 707-444-2000 for information. I believe the Trinity and Klamath are still open for Steelhead.

I was at the Mad Sat. and Sun., I won't say I was fishing because I will not consider what everyone was doing fishing. I have not fished steelhead a whole lot, mainly w/ guides up north. I wanted to see what this Mad river long lining, flossing, fly fishing or what it really is, "SNAGGING" was all about. After a day and a half I had enough. The older guys try to act like they are fishing, with short, small jerks of the pole, but the younger generation w/ no license, no report card, have taken this to a new level of small numerous casts w/ monster hook sets w/ any twitch in the line, every time, right in front of God and everybody. I saw fish snagged with eyeballs gone, huge gashes in there bodies from previous snaggers. Come on, is this the way it is going to be? It is no womder that our fishing industry is such a mess. What ever happened to the Dept. of Fish and Game? Does anybody care? What ever happened to the rule of releasing foul hooked fish? Help us all.

It looks to me like it'll be fishable with bait by early next week, should be perfect by that weekend. I'm hoping to hit it then. Of course this is all assuming we get like <1/16" of rain in the next week or two because for the next few days it'll be fairly suseptable to some rapid rises from rain, especially if the snow from this weekend starts to melt and drain into the river. You just gotta pray for cold and no precip. Be safe and tight lines.

Good morning. I enjoyed my visit last week on the Mad River. I tried a bit of bright colored flies to no avail. After watching a guy catch 3 steelhead in about a half hour at a spot I had just fished I decided to come back the next day and use his method. Two corkies, red hook and a fairly small sinker about 6 feet up the line. Didn't do me any good. But I do feel more comfortable fishing that part of the river and met some nice folks.
It looks like the rain probably mucked the river up a bit but the weather is looking pretty good for the extended forecast. My question is, how long does it take for the Mad to clear, assuming no rain after Wednesday? I'd like to take another shot at it before the season ends.

I lived in Humboldt County and learned to stealhead fish on the Mad River. At times when the water was high and muddy, we used to fly fish with weighted lines and catch fish. There is no doubt this is just like the long lining technique used today. Swinging flies is similar to long lining as you use a sinking line and it swings across the bottom. Indicator fly fishing is a little different as the line is not swinging across the bottom at least most of the time. A few weeks ago when I hooked seven fish in water that was not ideal as there was only a few feet of visibility. I was indicator fly fishing and I did get a couple of true takes during my drift. I also had a couple of hookups at the end when the line was swinging. I do mostly agree with Doc but feel indicator fly fishing is not exactly long lining. Let's have fun and keep catching those beautiful steelies.

I used to fly fish on the Mad in the high water and catch alot of fish. Fly fishing and long leaders is the same type of fishing believe it or not. because I know they cant see that fly in muddy water but you still catch fish on that fly because all your doing is long lineing them the same way your catching them on your baitcaster.Fisherman back in the mid 80's got the hang of the long leaders on the Mad because there use to be alot of fish caught in the muddy water by the fly fisherman so everybody startred useing the long leaders and haveing as much luck as the fly fisherman so if they ever outlaw long leaders get a flyrod and you can do the same thing

I fished the Mad a few weeks ago for the first time in years. Did pretty well fly fishing for the first time on the river going two for seven. Both landed were fresh chromies. I don't have any problem with any legal method used to catch steelies. My main objective is to catch fish any way legal, I hate to get skunked. After many years of not fishing the Mad, I was still amazed that things have not changed on the river. The willow long liners are still shoulder to shoulder. What a great fun day snagging others lines most of the day. The shoulder to shoulder fishing method is great as it keeps all the other holes open to catch steelies as I would much perfer. I ask only one thing, could the long liners please move aside once in a while as we fly guys sometimes have to move down river to land a nice fish? Is that too much to ask? My friend almost lost a 16 pound chromer due to long liners casting on his line!

The Mad will not change much due to rain as long as the river stays close to the same level. The best way to find out is to go to USGS Real time water data for California.I personally find that the fishing is better when the river is dropping or stable instead of on the rise Good luck.

As a primarily lure and bait fisherman I can honestly say that I do not snag my fish (I mean of course on a few occasions a dumb fish will run into a hook, but that happens to anyone) so damn straight I'm a purist, I'm the one on the riverbar who gets skunked 9 out of 10 times, but I am damn proud of that because I know that that one time means I did everything right, I defied all odds and got a fish that didn't want anything but one certain source of food to bite. I am very, very proud of the fact that I work and toil for hours to find out what to use, I am proud of the books, aritcles and reports I read to find the correct combinations of lure, size, color and so on. If you can feel that same feeling while puttiing your hook mnually into the zide of a fish's mouth than sweet, I'll just head down to the hatchery, go up to a holding area and manually stick a hook in the fish, because, after all, that's all you are doing.
